Get Ready, FAFSA is Coming.

It’s actually already here. FAFSA time, baby! A new year means it’s time to fill out a new FAFSA if you need aid in the coming year. With that, come several deadlines you need to know in order to get the best aid package available to you. Here’s a breakdown of Stony Brook University Spring 2015 deadlines for Financial Aid:

  • January 1st: Anytime after 1/1/15 (I know, we’re already past it), you can fill out the FAFSA over at http://www.fafsa.gov. You’ll be filling it out for the 2015-2016 school year, based on your 2014 income tax return. Remember, Stony Brook’s federal school code is 002838.
  • March 1st: Priority deadline for Freshman, Incoming Transfer and New Health Science Students who want to be considered for need-based, federal, financial aid (Federal Work Study, Federal SEOG, Federal Perkins Loan).
  • May 1st: Priority deadline for continuing students who want to be considered for need-based, federal, financial aid (Federal Work Study, Federal SEOG, Federal Perkins Loan).Fafsa-tips-meme

“I’m a new student, just starting in Spring of 2015, and I still haven’t completed my FAFSA. Can I still do it?”

That’s OK. You can still fill out the 2014/2015 FAFSA. Make sure you complete it by  to allow enough time for processing.

“What if I haven’t completed my taxes yet? Can I still fill out the FAFSA?”

Sure can! If you’re a new student, go ahead and fill out the FAFSA, using an estimate for your tax return information. You can use last year’s tax return as a guide for how much you should estimate. Then, when you do file your taxes, you can go back and update your form.

If you’re a continuing student, we would recommend that you wait to fill out the FAFSA until you have completed your taxes. However, if you want to apply for the need-based, federal, financial aid then go ahead and estimate your taxes and fill out the form now. Just remember to go back and update the form once you have actually filed your taxes.
