Microwave Monday: Valentine’s Rice Krispie Treats

By Lauren Sharkey

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’ve decided to dust off a classic that’ll be sure to please that special someone in your life: RICE KRISPIE TREATS!  Marshmallows, Rice Krispies…what’s not to love?

Here’s what you’ll need:

779

3 tablespoons butter
1 bag of mini-marshmallows
6 cups of Rice Krispies (don’t feel like you have to get Rice Krispies – the store brand is cheaper so go with that!)
Red food coloring (optional)
Heart-shaped cookie cutter (optional – $1.99 at Michael’s but I’m sure you can find it at any grocery store this time of year)
Wax Paper

Directions:

You can make this recipe one of two ways:

OPTION 1: STOVE TOP DIRECTIONS

1.  Place 6 cups of cereal in a bowl.  Set aside.  Lay down piece of wax paper over counter.

2.  Place butter and marshmallows in saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly.  Once everything begins to melt together, add five drops of food coloring.  If you like a deeper red, feel free to add more.

3.  Pour mixture over cereal and mix well.  Pour onto wax paper and flatten.  Let cool for about half an hour and use cookie cutter to make heart shapes!

OPTION 2:  MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS

1.  Place 6 cups of cereal in a bowl.  Set aside.  Lay down piece of wax paper over counter.

2.  Place butter and marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl.  Microwave 30 seconds at a time, stirring every 30 seconds, until everything is melted and mixed together.

3.  Remove bowl from microwave, add five drops of red food coloring (if you like a deeper red, feel free to add more).  Then pour marshmallow and butter mixture over cereal.

4.  Mix cereal, butter and marshmallows together well.  Then pour onto wax paper and flatten.

5.  Let cool for about a half-hour, and use cookie cutter to make heart shapes!

Cost Breakdown:

Butter: $3.99
Rice Krispies: $2.99
Food Coloring: $3.99
Marshmallows: $1.00
Cookie Cutter: $1.99
Wax Paper: $2.99

Groceries for this recipe, including tax, are about $20.  This recipe makes about 12 servings depending on how you cut them.  However, you can actually make two batches with these ingredients which puts each rice krispie treat at eighty-five cents – less than a dollar!  Not a bad way to say I love you!

Happy Valentine’s Day Seawolves!
