How To: Survive Black Friday – Part I

By Lauren Sharkey

We’ve all seen the signs – red and green M&M’s slowly making their way into the candy aisle at CVS, gift card centers being erected…an increase in the amount of emails you receive from various retailers.  It’s official, Seawolves, Black Friday will soon be upon us and with it, craziness.

Now, while more and more people are opting to wait for Cyber Monday instead of braving the cold temperatures of the early morning hours, there are still a number of people (like my brother) who absolutely LOVE Black Friday shopping.  More than that, they look forward to the deals, and the rush, that come from showing up earlier than everyone else.

But, before you camp out, there are some things to figure out beforehand that will hopefully make your Black Friday less stressful.  First, you have to be able to answer these four questions:

1.  WHO AM I BUYING FOR?

Before you do anything, make a list of who you are looking to buy presents for this holiday season.  Knowing who’s you have to get gifts for will allow you to answer the following questions more precisely, and hopefully alleviate some headaches.

2.  HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO SPEND?

This is THE MOST IMPORTANT question you have to ask yourself this holiday season.  Before you can even think about going into a store, you need to know how much money you have to spend on gifts.  Which leads us to question 3…

3.  AM I STILL BUYING FOR THE PEOPLE I LISTED FOR QUESTION #1?

Here comes the hard part.  While everyone wishes they could get a gift for each person on their list, the fact of the matter is that gifts are expensive.  So, once you’ve figured out how much of a budget you have – take a look at your list and see if you absolutely have to buy a gift for your grandmother’s sister’s husband’s daughter twice removed.

4.  WHAT AM I BUYING?

Black Friday is not for browsing – don’t be that guy that’s looking at the DVDs as he slowly makes his way to the poor dude in the blue shirt attempts to wave you down to the next cashier.  Know what you’re getting beforehand.

Once you’re able to answer these questions, you are ready for the next step.
